About Panola County

Panola County, located in northwest Mississippi, possesses a rich history amidst a diverse population of approximately 35,000 according to the 2000 U.S. census.  With nearly a quarter of the population living below poverty, Panola County faces unique societal challenges with respect to education, healthcare and economic development.

The county is one of the twelve large counties established in 1832 following the Chickasaw cession. Two early settlements established on opposite sides of the  Tallahatchie River resulted in continued debate over the location of the county courthouse.  As a result, today the county maintains two county seats located in the towns of  Sardis and Batesville with numerous smaller, rural communities dotting the county landscape.

Small towns, civic organizations, local businesses and county leadership collaborate on many levels, continually searching for ways to innovative and improve the quality of life for all  Panola County citizens.  With growing economic development, abundant natural resources and rich recreational opportunities, Panola County possesses great potential for growth and betterment.
