VOLUNTEER NORTHWEST MISSISSIPPI GAINS AMERICORPS*VISTA MEMBER

Shulanda Johnson joined the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi and Volunteer Northwest Mississippi as the new full-time Volunteer Coordinator August 29th.  She will fill the part-time position currently held by Crystal McNabb.

Volunteer Northwest Mississippi was called into action for disaster preparedness on August 30 to assist the DeSoto County Emergency Management Agency with the Emergency Operations Center.  Volunteers through this regional volunteer center manned phones and volunteered at the various shelters set up to house the evacuees.  Trained personnel brought Safe Spaces, a program of Save the Children, into two of the shelters.  This program provides safe and fun activities for children while parents deal with the stress of leaving their homes.

Shulanda is an AmeriCorps*VISTA member with the Mississippi Commission for Volunteer Service.  Shulanda previously worked as a VISTA member at the University of Mississippi serving as the Volunteer Service Center Coordinator.  Her other experiences include work in the Institute for Volunteerism and Civic Engagement at Rust College Community Development Corporation.  VISTA is part of the AmeriCorps national network of service programs housed under the Corporation for national and Community Service, an independent federal government entity.

“We are excited to have Shulanda join Volunteer Northwest Mississippi as the Volunteer Coordinator.  Her experience and knowledge of working with volunteers will assure the continuation of the good work of our regional volunteer center,”  Peggy Linton, Director, Volunteer Northwest Mississippi.

Volunteer Northwest Mississippi was established in 2007 and continues to connect people who care with causes that matter.  Individuals, families and groups are able to sign on as volunteers and nonprofits are able to list their volunteer opportunities. To reach Shulanda Johnson email at volunteer@cfnm.org or call 662.449.5002.  To sign on as a volunteer or a nonprofit go to www.volunteernwms.org.
