COUNTY SUPERVISORS ASSIST VOLUNTEER CENTER

DeSoto County Supervisors realize that people must come together when a disaster strikes.  For this reason they have donated $5,000 to DeSoto County’s volunteer center, Volunteer Northwest Mississippi.  I was delighted the Board of Supervisors was able to donate $5000 TO "Volunteer Northwest Mississippi." VNM provides a long overdue service to our community by coordinating the volunteer spirit in Desoto County with the agencies and service groups who so desperately need help.  Desoto County has always been blessed to have citizens who help each other and now through the efforts of VNM it will be much easier to connect the volunteers with the people and groups who need and deserve the help the most. (Bill Russell, President, Board of Supervisors)

Professionals and volunteers are relied upon to fulfill the many duties and responsibilities that surface after a disaster.  Volunteer Northwest Mississippi will be the ‘call center’ for volunteers seeking to provide assistance, working in cooperation with the county’s Emergency Management Agency.  “After Hurricane Katrina and the flash flood in Southaven, hundreds of people used the Community Foundation for their monetary contributions.  We were glad to serve as the ‘hub’ for local charitable contributions for these natural disasters.  Now we are set up to serve as the point-of-contact for volunteers who want to give of their time as well as money.  The contribution from the Board of Supervisors will allow our volunteer center to continuing its services and development.” (Tom Pittman, President, Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi)

Not only does the volunteer center assist in time of disaster, but also on a day-to-day basis by connecting volunteers with non-profits.  Operating under the volunteer management system, www.1800volunteer.org, Volunteer Northwest Mississippi provides an outlet for nonprofits to list their volunteer opportunities and for individuals, families, businesses and organizations to sign on as volunteers.  Volunteer Northwest Mississippi is an initiative of the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi and is located in Hernando.  For more information concerning Volunteer Northwest Mississippi, call 662.449.5002.
