Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi receives tobacco control grant from the Mississippi State Department of Health
The Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi has received a $32,471 community grant from the Mississippi State Department of Health’s (MSDH) Office of Tobacco Control. Monies from the grant are to be used by the Community Foundation and its GET A LIFE! health initiative to prevent tobacco use, encourage tobacco cessation and eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke among youth and adults in DeSoto and Tate Counties “Health is one of our priorities, and we as individuals control most of our health by our lifestyle choices,” said Tom Pittman, Community Foundation president. “We are pleased to add tobacco control to our Foundation’s fight against obesity. These two factors combine to put Mississippians at the bottom of the nation in health.” Each year, Mississippi spends $719 million on healthcare costs associated with tobacco use. The goal of MSDH’s Office of Tobacco Control is to improve the health of all Mississippians through the elimination of tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke. Crystal McNabb is the Program Director for the Mississippi Tobacco-Free Coalition of DeSoto and Tate Counties. “My job will be to work with both counties on tobacco prevention, education and cessation.
